This is a manga/grahic novel.  Scratch is the main character. He is the like the king of street ball. Did not get the story since this was volume 13, maybe best to start with volume 1.

Wangari's Trees of Peace: a true story from Africa is the story of one woman's effort to return green to Africa. Wangari's Trees of Peace is wonderful to introduce environmentalism. It also introduces some difficult subjects that may make some children and parents uncomfortable: prejudice ("Women can't do this"), violence ("Wangari blocks their way, so they hit her with clubs") and imprisonment ("They call her a troublemaker and put her in jail").

“Sounder” by William H. Armstrong

Sounder is the loyal coon hunting dog of a family of black sharecroppers. The father is sent to prison for stealing a ham and the men who come to take him away shoot Sounder in the process.

I loved reading this book since my son enjoyed it so much.  This story is about Peter Hatcher's family vacation which he is not looking forward to.  Sheila Tubman is going to be renting the summer home next to his family.  Peter is not sure if he can survive three weeks with Sheila and Fudge pestering him.

Where the Wild Things Are

This book is one of my favorite books in elementary school.  The adventures of Max begin after he dons his wolf suit.  It begins with his mom calling him "Wild Thing" and Max replies, "I'll Eat You Up!"  While he is in his room after being sent there the adventures begin.  He travels to where the wild things are and Max ends up taming them.  Max then becomes the King of all wild things and the rumpus begins. However Max gets lonely and misses those who love him leaving his kingdom behind.  Despite their beggin of him to stay he left back home where supper awaited him

Gulliver's Travels

Genre:  Fantasy

I liked this book because the adventures are interesting and the underlaying theme is pretty easy to follow.  In this novel Lemuel Gulliver is portrayed as the hero of four adventures.  His first being in Lilliput among small inhabitants.  In the second he is among giants in Brobdingnag.  In Gulliver's third voyage he travels to Luputa among the Strudbugs.  Lastly Gulliver finds himself among the Huoyhnhnms whom he takes a liking to.  However being on these adventures changes Gullivers way of thinking when he returns home.

I found this book informative and hard to put down.  The pictures definitely painted a memory in my mind of the hardships my people endured.

This story was about a goat who has a friendship with Glenmae.  Glenmae is a weaver who shears her goat Geraldine to weave a rug.  The story helps explain how to make a rug.  Kinaalda: A Navajo Girl Grows Up

Genre: InformationalI thought this story was great because of the information that it gives to the readers of our Navajo rite of passage.  It takes you back to the time when you had to do all that that the girl in the story does to enter womanhood and this book helps me get ready mentally on what to expect when my daugther goes through the passage.
